UPCOMING SOCIAL MEDIA CAMPAIGNS!

As another school year kicks off, we are excited to continue our monthly social media campaigns. The upcoming monthly social media campaigns for the 2022-2023 year include Sustainability on Campus, Recycling Easy, Ending Fast Fashion, Eliminating Footprints, Sustainability Made Easy, Clean Waterways, and Earth Day Everyday. These campaigns will be featured on Live Green! social media platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest. Each campaign will also include a monthly WordPress blog related to each campaign topic.

October is going to kick off the year by focusing on Sustainability on Campus. This will include different insights on how to live sustainably while living the college lifestyle. This could include: walking to class, taking notes digitally, unplugging unused electronics, getting a reusable coffee cup, studying green, and much more. At the end of this month, there will also be a campus-wide celebration for Campus Sustainability Month on October 25th. More details coming soon!

November’s campaign is all about Recycling Easy. In honor of National Recycling Day on November 15th, it’s only fitting to dedicate the whole month to recycling. Recycling reduces the amount of waste sent to landfills, conserves natural resources, prevents pollution, and saves energy. Many resources on and off campus make recycling that much easier. At Iowa State University, we offer campus-wide single-stream recycling, corrugated cardboard recycling, laboratory glass recycling, and much more.

For December, we will be highlighting more sustainable ways to obtain clothing, especially during this holiday season, by introducing the campaign Ending Fast Fashion. Fast fashion is the mass production of clothes that represent the latest trends at high speeds and low costs to maximize profits. This month will offer insight on easy alternatives to fast fashion. These may include thrift shopping, up-cycling, donating unwanted clothing, finding versatile clothing pieces, and purchasing from sustainable brands.

As January kicks off 2023 and new years resolutions are in the making, we will be talking about Eliminating Footprints. Ecological footprints measure how fast we consume resources and generate waste compared to how fast nature can absorb our waste and generate new resources. This month will offer insight into what actions we can change in our daily lives that will decrease our ecological footprint. This may be anything from composting to just simply walking to class.

February’s campaign will be highlighting easy efforts and alternatives to be more sustainable by introducing Sustainability Made Easy. This month holds a campus-wide celebration for sustainability, Symposium on Sustainability. This event is dedicated to the celebration and showcasing of ISU student, faculty, and staff sustainability commitment, initiatives, and accomplishments. Accompanying the Symposium is the annual Sustainapalooza event. Sustainapalooza features local food and food ingredient refreshments, a clothing swap, sustainability-inspired artwork, as well as poster and tabling displays.

The month of March will focus on Clean Waterways. With March 22 being World Water Day, it’s the perfect time to highlight the importance of water in our economy and planet as a whole. Approximately 3,575,000 people die each year from diseases stemming from unclean water. Our economy depends on clean water for manufacturing, farming, recreation, and energy production. Besides highlighting the importance of clean waterways, this month will also include several choices that can be made to help keep our waterways clean.

April’s campaign will be highlighting Earth Day, and how it deserves to be celebrated every day. Earth Day Everyday will focus on the different aspects of our Earth and how we can support it as best as possible. There will also be a campus-wide event on April 22 to honor Iowa State’s many sustainability initiatives, organizations, and accomplishments. Stay tuned for more details as April rolls around.
