Spring Semester Recap and April Happenings

Hi Cyclones! My name is Meghan Main and I am one of the Campus and Community Engagement Interns for the Live Green! Initiative. I am a junior majoring in Communication Studies and double minoring in Leadership Studies and Public Relations. I am thrilled to be working with the Live Green! Team and have really enjoyed getting to work with individuals all across the Iowa State and Ames communities promoting sustainability!

Sustainapalooza

First off, thank you to everyone who attended Sustainapalooza in February. It was such a successful event! We had over 600 students, faculty, and staff attend the event and achieved the following:

  • Over 30 campus and community organizations were in attendance to highlight their commitment to a sustainable future.
  • Over 550 items of clothing were donated, 223 items of clothing were swapped, $78 was collected for the S.H.O.P. on campus, plus multiple food items.
  • Over 310 “Make Your Own Trail Mix” were completed.
  • Over 300 “Make Your Own Toothpaste” were completed.
  • Numerous sustainable living prizes were awarded to attendees.

Again, thank you to all of you who attended, participated, and volunteered for Sustainapalooza! Without the contribution and dedication of individuals committed to Sustainability, this event could not be as successful as it was!

Celebrate Earth Month with Live Green!

This April we are taking virtual to a whole new level. This month we have launched the Live Green! Earth Month Challenge, taking place from April 1st – April 30th! This challenge allows us all a way to connect virtually, bringing Earth Day to your home, while still challenging ourselves to live more sustainability. With this opportunity, you can partake in daily challenges that range from learning about expiration dates to taking shorter showers, to perform throughout the month of April. And not only do these challenges span six categories (food, water, nature, community, well-being, and energy and climate), you also have the opportunity to create and track your own! With every challenge you complete, you can earn points and reflect on your experience. The more points you earn the better chance you have of earning some sustainable goodies and gift cards at the end of April. We encourage you to sign up and Get Your Eco On!  Also, don’t forget to tag us at #ISUVirtualEarthMonth and earn some extra challenge points!

Also…April 22nd, also be on the lookout for a special tribute to Earth Day! Since it is Earth Day’s Fiftieth Celebration, we knew we had to do something fabulous, so we are creating a video dedicated to this commemoration! SO, you won’t want to miss a thing!! We encourage you to keep up with the Live Green! Earth Month Challenge (and everything sustainable) on our Live Green! Social Media accounts.

P.S. In addition to our celebration of Earth Month 2020, check out the Office of Sustainability’s Live Green! Earth Month Calendar to get involved in all the cool virtual events happening in Ames, throughout the U.S. and around the world connected to environmental, economic, and social sustainability! From museum tours to concerts to webcams in wildlife areas, these are opportunities that would not otherwise be available unless you were physically there. Travel the globe while supporting social distancing!

As always thank you all so much for connecting to and supporting Live Green! and sustainability at Iowa State University (this year and beyond too)! We are looking SO forward to a fantastic month eco challenging each other and celebrating individually and virtually together, everything our Earthly home gives to us each and every day.

If you have any questions, need clarification on anything related to taking part in the Earth Month Challenge or help navigating the Earth Month Calendar, please don’t hesitate to reach out! You can contact us at livegreen@iastate.edu

Thanks so much everyone! Happy Earth Month!!

Meghan & Kelsey
